I get why people love marble countertops. Honestly, I love them too.
There is something really beautiful about marble that feels soft, natural, and timeless. The movement in the stone, the little imperfections, the way light hits it during the day — it can completely change how a kitchen feels.
But before choosing marble for your kitchen or bathroom remodel, I think it is important to know what living with marble is actually like.
Because marble is not just about how it looks in photos.
What Living with Marble Is Really Like

It is a natural stone, which means it is softer and more porous than materials like quartz. Over time, it can stain, etch, and show wear from everyday life. Things like lemon, coffee, wine, or even just regular cooking can leave marks on the surface.
For some people, that is part of the charm. They like that marble changes over time and starts to tell a story.
For others, it becomes stressful. I have seen homeowners become anxious every time someone puts a glass down on the counter.
And honestly, neither reaction is wrong.
Think About Your Real Lifestyle
That is why I always tell clients to think about their real lifestyle before making material decisions. Not the Pinterest version of life. Real life.
Do you cook a lot? Do you have kids? Do you host often? Are you okay with natural wear and aging? Or do you want something that feels easier to maintain day to day?

Who Should Choose Marble?
Marble may be right for you if:
• You appreciate natural materials and don’t expect perfection.
• You see beauty in a surface that develops character over time.
• You want a kitchen that feels timeless rather than trend-driven.
• You’re willing to wipe up spills and care for the stone properly.
Marble may not be right for you if:
• You want a completely maintenance-free countertop.
• You have young children who regularly leave juice, vinegar, or colored foods on surfaces.
• The idea of etching or patina would bother you.
One of the biggest misconceptions about marble is that it should stay looking brand new forever. In reality, marble tells the story of how a home is lived in. Some homeowners love that. Others don’t. Neither answer is wrong.
When selecting marble countertops, I encourage clients to visit the slab yard whenever possible. A small sample can never tell the full story. The movement of the veining, the direction of the pattern, and how multiple slabs bookmatch together can dramatically affect the final result. This is often the difference between a beautiful kitchen and an unforgettable one.
